Pre-proposal discussion here:  https://www.dash.org/forum/threads/pre-proposal-video-with-danny-trejo-to-promote-dash-on-social-platforms.31397/#post-173887

 • Description of project
To create an engaging, high-quality video to promote Dash on social media. All current Dash social media campaigns
make use of an older, animated explainer video. Dash needs much more. This video will have all the elements necessary
to drive brand awareness and generate great results to the community.
Regarding recent news about changes in online advertising policies for these
kinds of campaigns, we think this spot makes sense right now because:
1) Dash needs something in the short term to attract viewers and drive awareness other than an explainer video.
2) A funny, high-quality piece of content is more likely to be shared on
social media which will help with long-term exposure and virality.

 • Creative summary (30 second spot)
A group of questionable cholo characters discuss/argue about their current payment platform.  Suddenly, Danny
Trejo arrives in a low rider and tells them about something better.
Through extremely intelligent and clever dialogue, Danny quickly
educates them about the key benefits and features of Dash.
Tone examples include this Wayne’s World scene where the dialogue is unexpectedly intelligent and informative.

Danny Trejo is an American actor who has appeared in numerous Hollywood films and TV shows. His work has appeared in Breaking Bad,The X-Files, Con Air, Sons of Anarchy, among others.

 • Production schedule
Production and principal photography will take place the week of April 2nd.
Final product expected to be delivered on April 11th*.
* This could shift by a week or so (max) as Danny is currently filming three things and will be fitting this in as well.

 • Budget breakdown
$50K - Approximate Key Talent fee (actors)
$10K - SAG (Screen Actors Guild), Admin, Legal (this will be recognized as a
SAG/AFTRA project and digital usage, meaning we would only be using the
content for digital distribution — i.e., not broadcast television).
$60K - Principal Photography (Includes all gear, production team, location, props, extras, etc.)
$30K - Post production (Edit, Music, Sound, Mix, Color, Graphics, Titles)
Total: $150K

 • Who we are (2 Key Partners)
1) Cordurouy
My name is Nathan Pettijohn, Founder and CEO of Cordurouy, based in Los Angeles, CA. We've partnered with dozens of influencers,
celebrities and top-tier production companies. My strategy clients
include Jeremy Renner, William Shatner and public companies such as National CineMedia. I have overseen product launches and digital branding campaigns for
brand clients such as NVIDIA and Vizio. I also serve as a talent manager
to business innovators and leaders such as Janice Bryant Howroyd (the
first African American woman to own a billion-dollar company, The ActOne
Group) and am a contributing writer for Forbes on topics related to
growth hacking.

2) Substance Over Hype
Substance Over Hype (SOH) is a creative agency and production company specialized
in cutting-edge content at a first-class execution level. SOH is led by
writer / director Daniel Malakai Cabrera and its work speaks for
itself.  The company has recently delivered successes for brands such
as: JW Marriott, Fiat, Sony, Ritz-Carlton, and more. One great example
of their work with Strike Social and Marriott is parts 1-3 of “Two Bellman” short films for JW MARRIOT. Substance Over Hype wrote, produced and directed this series for Marriott. Strike Social ran the media.
Malakai and Cordurouy have worked closely together the past several years and
look forward to bringing stylized, fun and memorable content to Dash.
They will execute content that raises awareness while staying in line
with the objectives put forth by Ryan Taylor, Fernando and the Core
team.
This partnership and creative plan is supported and sourced by Strike Social, the No. 17 fastest-growing private company in the U.S. by Inc. Magazine. Strike Social harnesses the power of artificial
intelligence to drive the best outcomes in YouTube and social media
advertising. The company is currently running two YouTube video
advertising campaigns to promote Dash. Learn more about Strike's

 • The benefits of this proposal
(A) Efficiency - We are more nimble and less bloated than most agencies. As a result, we are able to deliver content
at rates far below the competition.
(B) Relationships - We are based in Los Angeles and have relationships with
the types of celebrities and influencers that will be needed in the
long term in order to ever truly get Dash mainstream exposure. Our
relationships often come with better rates.
(C) Experience - Both Malakai and myself have a range of work experience to
point to for high quality content, branding and growth hacking.

 • Goals
As this is our first proposal, our goal is to exceed the community’s expectations so that we can continue working
with Dash.  We are asking for a modest $150k while delivering content
that actually looks like a million-dollar commercial.
We have secured Danny Trejo for the first week of April, the crew is
locked, and we are securing locations now. We are prepping for the shoot
in good faith — with the trust that this value will be seen and
appreciated by the community.
Our target market will be English-speaking audiences, though with Danny
Trejo we have an opportunity to also deliver a Spanish-language version
of the commercial (the sooner this proposal passes the sooner we can
coordinate those logistics according to his availability to make this
version also happen.)
In addition to the 30 second spot we also intend to deliver cuts for
promotion on Snapchat as well as stills for online display promotions.

 • How will Masternodes know what’s going on?
We will be posting updates at every step of this project, from pre-production to the final result.

We are very excited to serve the Dash community with excellence!

I want to mention Danny has multiple taco shops in LA (6?) . This proposal gives the opportunity to make the pitch that we could get Dash accepted at these locations. I can also see how this could help build the Dash community in LA in other ways.

There have been a few comments on this and other proposals regarding the benefit of promoting video on social media versus traditional avenues such as broadcast TV so I wanted to provide a little more context on the strategy here.

1) By starting this with digital usage, we are able to secure Danny quickly; at a rate far cheaper than one that initially includes broadcast rights. Practically, the broadcast requires much more outlay, legal review, union involvement, etc. In addition, it requires the DASH community to also put up the resources for buying the associated TV slots (air time). This creates a far more complex and costly request when a more practical approach can first prove the content and allow for broadcast to be added.

2) If the community responds well to the finished product we will negotiate an additional fee to Danny and secure the broadcast rights. By adding this on after the fact, we will likely get broadcast rights at a rate far lower one than making for broadcast in the first place. This is not uncommon, as seeing a high quality final product often motivates talent and their representation to approve further usage.

3) Of course every production team thinks their creative and production will turn out amazing. By first promoting online (while we still have time to do so) we can prove out success via engagement and viewer feedback before putting forth media budgets to promote on other mediums.

Please let us know if we can answer any further questions. We are excited about all the potential to make something truly great.

How do we validate the participation of Danny Trejo in this or the possibility of him bailing at the last minute?
Reply

We have followed all professional procedures one uses for securing talent; we have years of experience casting celebrities for branded content and producing content to validate those procedures. We are working with Danny’s management and union which add additional layers of professionalism.

With respect, I don't believe that answered the question.

At this moment, do you have Danny Trejo confirmed for this project or not?
Reply

Yes. He is confirmed.

The fact that Danny Trejo is willing to work on this project so soon and for such a reasonable price makes this an easy yes for me. I can't wait to see this.

IMHO, this is the most exciting proposal on the board. I think with the ad ban coming up, it's more important that we have funny videos with recognizable actors, since we can't "push" our ads on people in the same way. This has viral potential if properly executed.

Given that this video is going to focus on Dash as a payment platform I think it's worth funding. Even though it will be difficult to promote via ads (where crypto will be banned) I think it will still get plenty of organic hits, and will provide a nice reference point for anybody wanting to spread the word about Dash. Good value also.

Got my votes.

Does this proposal require the successful funding of another proposal in order for the final product to be used?
Reply
3 points,6 years ago
No. If this proposal passes, Dash will have permission for any digital usage of the final product.

So, Dash becomes the owner of rights to a video, but will have to fund the use of the video in FUTURE proposals? [yes/no]
With the end of YouTube accepting advertising from crypto quickly approaching, how can we actually make use of this product? [ads on air travel perhaps]
I am not against the idea, I just want MNOs to realize, we might pay for the creation of the greatest video advertisement ever, and not be able to show it to anyone. Or, perhaps someone who knows more about this than I do can clear up my doubts.

My understanding is that google is banning the purchasing of crypto ads, but crypto videos online would still be fine. So virally, this video could still take off there far past June.

I think there are tons of other places online for video ad purchases, too. Not sure of exactly where, but hulu, vimeo, come to mind.

Or, any other future proposal owner could take the video and buy local/national tv ad spots with this.

No matter what happens, Dash will have a video that's hopefully really cool. I'm actually thinking myself of getting my blog back up and using this for a post when it's finished. Could be posted on all Dasher's FB feeds, etc., too.

No. There does not have to be future proposals to fund the use of this video. If a video is funny and people share it, that helps Dash gain more awareness. If there is an influencer in it, that helps as well. Both are tactics to offset the lack of ads in order to drive more organic reach, but the video will still be able to exist on social and be shared well into the future (in the same way the current animated explainer video will still exist on YouTube whether ads are promoting or not). That said, Strike Social is currently running social media ads to the animated explainer video, so once this video is finished it can be swapped in to get those views until June (based on existing proposals that already passed).

As I said in the Pre-Proposal: "Especially with the turndown in other advertisement opportunities due to platform-wide bans on cryptocurrency, making up for that lack of exposure with star power is pretty important. Also, given the recent push in to Latin countries, having a well-known, memorable, Latin-American Actor as well as a *Spanish Language version* would be a huge benefit. People pay attention to people like Danny Trejo, they notice him, even if the content of the commercial is nothing they are interested in. This, IMO, has as much or more potential to really draw interest than a lot of other proposals. It's a hefty price to even get someone like him on board, but entirely worth it, IMO."

The fact that this team is open to working with @pmckenna12's proposal team makes this even more important. We need to go out with a bang!

Can this video/script be more about merchant adoption than "buy the F'ing Dash" which is why Youtube, Facebook and Google are banning cryptos in the first place?
Reply
4 points,6 years ago
Yes. The video will feature Dash as a payment platform, not an investment vehicle.

Just to confirm - we have been working with Nathan with Cordurouy on the creative elements of this video, and providing active support in as many ways as we can. We can't wait for it, we believe Danny Trejo is perfect for a potentially viral video, and we hope we get the opportunity to promote it on Youtube and other media channels. - Patrick, Strike Social

Especially after the pre-proposal discussion, we're very excited to produce this Dash promotional video with Danny Trejo. We think it's going to be very funny and informative. For those proposal owners already purchasing views for Dash, this will be a big upgrade from the main Dash video. If there are any specific questions I can answer, please let me know. -Nathan Pettijohn, Founder, CEO Cordurouy

Just in case you have just woke up - Google, Facebook and Twitter banned crypto ads. What "social platforms" do you mean?
Reply
1 point,6 years ago
Yes, that has been taken into account in this proposal. YouTube ads can run until June. Regardless of whether ads can continue running on each social network, having high quality content on those platforms with an influencer lends to something much more likely for people to share and drive organic engagement longterm (the video will still live on social whether or not ads are still promoting it - and people will share a funny video with a celebrity much more often than they'll share an animated explainer video or an advertisement without a celebrity). By getting this up and running quickly we can benefit from a few months of promoting something great with current online media investments which will drive more longterm benefits to Dash.
