DASH NATION SLACK UPGRADE

Hi everyone, I'm Tao Of Satoshi.

You may know me from Cash Alternative TV, my Twitter account Cash Alternative, or around the forums and Reddit. I also own and manage Dash's premier online source for communication and collaboration, Dash Nation Slack.

It is Dash Nation Slack that brings me here today. We established it in October 2016, and it promptly grew in popularity and usage. People from all over the world frequent it and contribute to Dash through talent, connections, or sometimes pure enthusiasm. It became a "go-to" place to discuss all of Dash's issues and events in a respectful atmosphere. Rules of the Slack are conducive to respectful dialogue, be it in agreement or disagreement. Projects have been born, inspired by, or discussed in our Slack. It is much more than a chat room, as it builds relationships between people from all over the world due to its "real-time" attributes. In short, it provides the experience that should be associated with Dash.

Community-based work to propel Dash forward is done there as well. Projects that have been conceived, influenced or aided by Dash Nation Slack include but are not limited to Dash Force, the Point of Sale project, and the #FirstDashWallet campaign.

Lately though, Dash Nation Slack has become a victim of its own success. The free Slack has some limitations that aren't conducive to a thriving online community to continue to grow. A 10K message limit means that messages are often lost within a couple of days, leading to lost productivity from teams who use the Slack for their communications. A limit to the storage space means that users are often greeted with a "Your Slack storage limit is full" when trying to upload files to the Slack for all to enjoy. A limit to integrations means that we cannot provide the optimal experience for users of the Slack, we cannot provide a high level experience that Dash itself provides with its technology. Dash works extremely well, we need a communication and collaboration channel that works equally well.

"What are the benefits of a paid Slack?"

A paid Slack offers the following benefits to the community communication and collaboration.

- Unlimited message limit
Dashers who use Dash Nation Slack will be secure in the knowledge that their contributions will not be lost in the abyss, leading to decreased productivity. Messages in public and private channels will be kept, so nothing is lost.

- 10GB of file space per member
There will be no more instances of there being not enough room to upload key items to the Slack.

- Unlimited integrations
We will be able to provide a richer experience for our users with more features.

- Custom User Groups to reach a team or department
This would be beneficial for groups such as Dash Force or any other DAOs who may use Dash Nation Slack in the future.

- Voice and video calls
Up to 15 participants can share in a video call from within a paid Slack

- Screen sharing

- Search & Intelligence
Search for relevant people, messages, and files

Preferred support

"So, what are you asking for, Tao?"

In order to provide a top-notch experience for our users, it is necessary to upgrade to a paid Slack.

A paid Slack membership total is the number of active users by $8 USD. At the present time, we have ~500 active users, so I would require around $4,000 USD per month at current levels. As this will be a multi-month proposal, I will be asking for 50% more than I need due to the inevitability of Slack growth due to current contributions and newcomers loving their experience there, and telling their friends. I will keep detailed records of payments to Slack, and any leftover funds will be taken into consideration in future extension proposals. I am also requesting a salary to administer and monitor the newly paid Slack. If you feel I have done a good job making Dash Nation one of the best Slack experiences out there, please vote for this proposal. It would be great to be able to scale this experience, and keep contributing meaningfully to the Dash ecosystem.

This is a breakdown of the monthly funds that I am asking for:

22.25 DASH - Fees to make Dash Nation Slack a paid experience for our users (Unlimited message history, unlimited file sharing, unlimited integration, and other perks). This includes a 50% buffer which, if unused, will go towards future extension proposals.

10 DASH - Tao Of Satoshi Slack administration, monitoring and community building efforts

1.67 DASH - 3 payments to recover the 5 DASH proposal fee.

TOTAL: 33.92 DASH per month

I would appreciate your support. It's very important to have a medium of communication that can grow with its users, and offering an experience that parallels the Dash experience itself in quality. Thank you my friends.

Tao.

The Dash Slack is the one place I find extremely useful to build community - a very big YES from me

Great! It is the premier place to communicate about Dash, and it will only get better.

Voting yes to the requested paid Slack membership and to your proposed salary for the administration and monitoring of it.

Voting yes, but hoping we can move over to some of the better alternatives eventually :)

Voting yes. I would echo the comments about alternatives to slack for the future tho and maybe split your pay from the slack cost next time around? Don't be shy Tao you have definitely earned that pay I feel.
BTW font size is great for me but I'm half blind ;)

LOL. At least it works for someone! Thanks for supporting our Slack.

As a developer that is on the Dash Nation Slack, there are times when the 10,000 message limit hides information that is useful in previous conversations (private and public). I am in favor of this proposal.

As I said in the proposal writeup, this does become a problem for working groups, as well as people who went away for awhile and would like to catch up. Thanks for illustrating the problem from a users point of view.

Yes for me.

And Tao appears willing to monitor/explore other products if something better and cheaper comes along. Note that Glip is "free" just like Slack is "free". It's the basic only version of Glip that is free. The pro version is ten bucks a user. Slack is eight bucks a user. Here is a very long and very detailed comparison.

No, this is not true. The free version of Glip does almost everything the pro version of Slack does. Unlimited messaging is free on Glip, so is unlimited storage. 10 seconds on their webpage confirms this. https://glip.com/pricing

The information is false, I'm very disappointed you didn't spend the time to verify it yourself. I'd be happy to vote to pay you for the time you spend administering the platform. But you do not sound like you have spent any time doing due diligence here, and are being very flippant about wasting money.

I haven't researched it yet. I'm concentrating on giving my users the best experience on the platform that has been successful. I am open to other alternatives in the future.
Reply

You keep saying you are open to alternatives, but we're giving you a great free alternative and you're ignoring it. What gives??

I love the slack and Tao should be rewarded for his efforts!
We are getting dozens of new members everyday - the energy in there is awesome and great for networking.
Obvious "Yes" from me.

Maybe, we should move now before getting bigger? 2cents.

This link reads more like a proposal, not all positive. Slack has been providing a great experience for our users, and if upgraded, would have more features needed to create a great meeting place. The extra app integrations alone would help. Thanks for the added info to consider!

Voting Yes but I hope you consider alternatives to Slack.

Have you explored the free and opensource alternatives to slack? There are many slack clones and slack is the most expensive option I know of. If it's truly the best option for the dash community, I don't mind spending the money.

But someone should do the due diligence here, if nothing beats the commerical option, it still seems like there are better options. For instance, Glip.com is a (closed-source) option that does almost everything Slack Pro does better, their free tier has unlimited messaging, they only ask for $ to support video chat, which probably isn't necessary for us.

Thanks for all your effort Tao, so please don't take this the wrong way, voting no for now.

Hm, I'd be interested in looking into Glip, it would be nice to save some treasury funds for some big promotional projects.

No offence. I consider Slack to be the best complete package out there, with stable mobile apps allowing for access to discussions and team work from wherever you are. I would be open to looking at other options in the future should this not be the case anymore.

As with Dash, user experience is my top priority.

Thanks for the feedback!

Glip has an excellent mobile app as well. I have used both professionally and Slack doesn't seem to have any significant advantages. What part of the Glip user experience do you have a problem with?
Reply
0 points,6 years ago
I think this is wise. Time is critical in this rapid growth phase, so I'd rather risk overpaying short-term to ensure the best experience. You can always migrate later, no big thing to overpay a bit, perhaps. Migrate too early and fail on UX or adoption = fail.

Thank you, sir. If a clearly better user experience presents itself, I would definitely consider it.

How many hours per day average would you say you spent the last 3 months doing "administration, monitoring and community building efforts"?

What does "administration, monitoring and community building efforts" mean? Are you planning on doing something new or just the same as you have been doing?

I ask because 10 Dash is a lot and I see guys on the mod squad (troyDash, Macrochip) putting in a bunch of hours per day and they don't get paid anywhere near that much. I don't think any of the MS members would even accept that much even if i tried to give it to them.

Great question! As I'm sure you are aware, I spend my every free minute building the Dash community. On Slack, I monitor the Slack for violations of policy, deal with the infractors through PM, administer the Slack through announcements and changes to the channel listings, organize and motivate my team in the moderation channel, and plan/enforce new rules as they come up.

I helped to create Dash Nation Slack into what it is today through my examples of professionalism and positivity. As most on the Slack would attest to, our Slack has a different feel from other Slacks, an inviting atmosphere that I had no small hand in creating. I'm really quite proud of it, and i work hard to keep it that way.

But a community communication channel is nothing with a community. I dedicate my every waking hour to promote Dash and invite people to join us on our Slack so they can enjoy the Dash experience.

CATV, and my CashAlternative Twitter account where I devote all my efforts to Dash and drawing people to our Slack through auto-direct messages when they follow me, as well as supporting your Dash Force with devotion, I might add, takes up every ounce of free time I have. No offense to my Mod Squad peeps, but they probably don't work quite as hard as I do.

So, between my inside the Slack and outside the Slack community building efforts, I feel that this stipend is justified. Thank you for giving me this chance to explain that, and I hope I can look forward to your support, as I have supported you. Cheers.

I'll vote yes because we can afford it :) But it would really be nice to get the most out of paying Slack and get some sort of endorsement or a better deal from them.

I agree. It may be worthwhile to open a dialogue with them and do something that would be mutually beneficial. Thanks for the idea! Slack accepting Dash would be nice.

I would really prefer if we could use an open source app instead of Slack. For me, one of the most important aspects of cryptocurrency is that it's open source, and it would be great if we could use open source software for this. Here are some options I found, maybe someone has experience with them and can recommend one of them?

Unfortunately, there is no really good replacement of Slack for big communities. Riot doesn't have emojis and Rocket Chat sucks because of bugs.
Reply
2 points,6 years ago
Glip is an excellent replacement, they are directly competing with Slack, but are mostly free. Please give it a chance before we waste thousands of dollars unnecessarily.

Actually, I'm testing out mattermost with one community since today, will see how it goes.

As others have mentioned (and I have discussed with Tao about this a little as well), I do think we might need to either change some plans, or step up our slack user administration procedures *if* we run into certain issues with this. But without having tried it, we aren't going to know. Tao has been a great ambassador/volunteer for the Dash community for a long time and I trust that he will be able to make the right decisions here. I think it's worth the shot and also to send the message that the Dash community values its contributors and wants them to have the best experience possible. Voting yes

you have to delete everything and save the blank page. then go back and copy and paste and select all and use a smaller font. it is a pita and even doing all that i can't guarantee it will work and not cause other formatting errors. i will probably just use the official forum from now on. i have spent many hours the last several months just trying to get fonts and everything to format correctly on here.
