Proposal description

PROPOSAL UPDATE (Feb 21, 2020)

Based on the feedback received from the Dash Community and Andy Freer’s inputs, we have made two major changes.

1. We have modified the scope of this proposal to supporting operations for the proposed Dash Platform Incubator through bounty management, developer communications and building evonet developer tutorials. We believe this change will increase the bandwidth to work with external developers exploring Dapps on the Dash Platform.

2. We have reduced the cost of this proposal to 64 Dash/Month effectively by increasing the duration of this project by one month. This project will now be for the next three months( March-April-May) with the two remaining instalments. (192 Dash over the next 3 Months = 64 Dash/Month)

Dash Platform Incubator Support - Bounty Management, Developer Communications and Tutorials (March-April-May 2020)

PROPOSAL AIMS

1) Dash Platform Incubator - Support, Management and Publicity :

We will work closely with Andy Freer on growing and managing the proposed Dash Platform Incubator. Our work and responsibilities will include drafting and publishing bounties, leveraging different platforms and social media to publicise bounties, reward management, developer communication and documenting Dapps. The objective is to undertake key administrative and promotion responsibilities and increase the overall bandwidth of the incubator to reach out and communicate with more developers.

2) Building Dash Platform Tutorials

We aim to create developer focused educational resources by documenting the work done by bounty hunters and converting it into tutorials. Given the new features of the Dash Platform, we believe creating educational resources around the dash platform could significantly help the next wave of developers to code on Dash.

3)  Feedback Loop - Protocol Development

We will work to collate and document feedback from independent developers working on bounties and projects and share it with Core Developers working on the underlying protocol. We hope this external feedback can prove to be a useful resource in prioritising important features.

WORK DONE SO FAR

Over the last few months, we have worked to promote Dash to Developers around the globe through developer focused content, answering support queries, content and PR through the #BuildWithDash campaign. More Details of our work can be found on the January 2020 Dash Watch Report.

We now aim to refocus this work on growing the Dash Platform through bounties for Dapps and DAPI integrations via the Dash Platform Incubator, which is the next logical conclusion for our work.

INTEGRATIONS

Floyx
, an upcoming privacy-focused social media platform for blockchain news and content has integrated Dash as part of the Developer Program. The platform is similar to established social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, and has a function to allow companies to pay to promote their posts and has found strong user growth. Floyx is also offering a 50% discount for users that utilize Dash as a payment method.

BITMIX

While Private Send caters to many active Dash Users for general use case, there is still a strong need for external privacy solutions for other wallets or exchanges that currently do not support private send due to regulatory concerns or technical gaps. Bitmix is a popular transaction privacy service has crafted a new solution for Dash on its platform as part of the Dash Developer Program.

KIMEO

Video Rewards App Kimeo has joined the Dash Developer Program and is working on integrating Dash. 100,000 Users will soon be able to Earn Dash For Browsing Content.

Kimeo leverages the combination of blockchain, cloud and cryptocurrencies, enabling users to get rewarded for adding or consuming content while allowing advertisers to reward people for watching; maintaining a balance between all three groups.

SOCIAL MEDIA PROMOTIONS AND SUPPORT

The BuildWithDash Twitter handle has found engagement on twitter with many posts strongly retweeted and liked.

More importantly, it has resulted in quality leads for the program without significant investment into advertising. Additionally, reddit has also proven to be a great source of developer/entrepreneur leads and we aim to scale up such campaigns. The program has a functional support mechanism by which teams can have their support queries answered.

CONTENT BUILDING

We developed original content in written formats to promote dash to developers in creative ways. Here are examples of some articles written on medium.

MODIFIED BUDGET

We propose to utilise the remaining two instalments of 96 Dash (Totaling 192 Dash) over the three months (Mar, Apr, May 2020), effectively reducing the cost of this proposal to 64 Dash/Month(192Dash/3 = 64 Dash) to the network. This proposal will now run concurrently with the duration of the Dash Platform Incubator Proposal.

This budget will be used towards paying costs to a small team that will administer the incubator, support developers, manage communications, collate feedback and document dapps to serve as educational content for the next wave of developers on the dash platform. We will also repurpose all existing social media channels to focus on the Dash Platform Incubator.

Happy to answer any queries !

THANK YOU

Discussion: Should we fund this proposal?

Hi there,

As mentioned in the new proposal description, I have had several meetings with the PO (Guarav) recently to discuss how best to support development on top of Dash Platform, which is something I have been doing quite a lot of recently behind the scenes with various devs / teams in our ecosystem.

In this case, we discussed how it was probably too early for a Hackathon, with Contracts not opened up in the protocol yet or DashPay wallet released (this would limit what devs could complete during a live hackathon event)

During our meetings we discussed bounties quite a lot, i.e. what the bounties should be, scope, how to break them down and advertise them to devs etc which I found helpful and coming out of that Guarav has decided to refocus this proposal to support the bounty efforts.

So I can't comment on the historical reputation, delivery, or anything else relating to the PO. But what I can do is say that if the PO delivers what he is stating in the new proposal description then I think it will add value to Platform development and i'm happy to work with him.

Best,
Andy Freer

30K for an online hackathon? Going to pass.

Hi 3d1409ae

Less than 20% of the budget is directly tied as a prize to the EvoNet hackathon (~50 Dash). The rest of the budget is to support a small team dedicated to developer outreach, support, use-case integrations and content creation.

With Dash Evolution Live, we are seeing a surge of developer interest in building applications. This proposal aims to guide developers through reference apps and helping them get hands-on experience with dAPI and Dash Drive.

Ok I will reconsider.

Since every second support query we received was focused on what could be built with evolution, we thought we should run a contest to get developers coding on Dash, in addition to our developer outreach efforts.

Thank you for your reconsideration.

Dash Developer Program welcomes Kimeo - a video rewards platform with 100.000 users. Kimeo will soon allow users to earn dash for creating or consuming content while enabling businesses to spend their Dash for advertising.

Dominant Networks like Youtube and Facebook have often used their position to ban crypto ads and even unjustly purge crypto videos! Beyond Monetisation, apps like Kimeo can leverage the powerful combination of the censor proof Dash Cloud (Drive) and dAPI to resist such arbitrariness. We are excited to be pursuing such potentially disruptive use cases for Dash Evolution.

Seems premature. We should wait till more functionality is available on EvoNet.

Hi Geert

With Dash Platform live on Evonet, there is a strong uptick in developer interest. To carry forward this momentum, it becomes important to help developers get acquainted with it through hands-on experience. This will also hold them in good stead as more phases come live.

This initiative kickstarts this important process while building reference apps on Evonet to guide the others.

Why do we need Dash mixer while we have PrivateSend?
Reply

Hi Vasyan,

Thank you for your question.

Private Send remains unbroken and the gold standard for transaction privacy. However, regulators have sometimes been concerned about it potentially being an impediment to KYC/AML requirements.

Dash Core Group, in a document clarifying Private Send’s legal position explains how conceptually, it is no different from the other third party apps offering the same service for bitcoin; even pre-dating private send. Here is that document : https://blog.dash.org/dashs-privacy-features-and-compliance-c27d79254ff1

Having other apps offer the same service commercially helps further clear up the important nuance that Private Send is simply an on wallet solution that performs a similar function for Dash. Thus it follows that Dash deserves equal regulatory treatment as bitcoin, at the very least - while being superior in other respects.

Apart from this, since Private Send is not currently supported by all exchanges, having third party apps offering this service commercially facilitates can add more flexibility to transacting users. It also furthers the impression that Dash is open to developers and their ideas.

I have previously supported Gaurav's work and believe developer advocacy (and an Evo hackathon) to be a huge benefit to our path forwards, in terms of building reference apps, demonstrating the value of Evo / platform and introducing ourselves to a new generation of developers (and some old hands!).

If there is room in this cycle I see little harm in this proposal, however I do find Gaurav's execution to be lacking and the results thus far uninspiring. I also believe us to have minimal presence in India / Pakistan and focus on European and North American developer talent to be more beneficial.

I have offered to put a proposal in to award funds to DCG custody for the future sponsorship, running or subcontracting of a hackthon, externally to their 60% ask. I believe this would offer a fantastic benefit in terms of talent attracted to Dash, media coverage and reference projects. Hopefully we retain this recent uptick in price and their is sufficient room in the budget to start setting aside funds for a full Dash Evo launch hackathon (timed for launch on livenet). This Hackathon could take place in the US (potentially at ASU for DCG proximity) or Europe (where we have a host of talent, both developers at core and otherwise and the DACH embassy).

Hi Ash

Thank you for your comment.

We completely agree that it is important to partner with developers worldwide to build reference apps that can demonstrate Dash Platform’s feature set.

However, you seem to be mistaken about the Hackathon or Dash Developers being a regional or location specific exercise.

The proposed Hackathon is wholly online to enable developers to participate from anywhere in the world. We have signed up developer teams from across regions and many integrations are at advanced stages of development besides the ones we have already announced.

It is crucial to motivate more and more development activity to carry forward the momentum that Evonet's release has given us !

I see no efforts to connect our internal developers with whatever developers you've signed on and little value in a custodial mixing service and yet to launch social media platform. With respect I don't see the results I'd look for with this budget. I have partaken in many hackathons including those sponsored by bloomberg, PayPal, palantir and the like and I've yet to see a good online one. An online hackathon also doesn't offer the same media and presence opportunities as a physical one at the same price point does.

While we see the merits of conducting a physical hackathon, not everyone may be able to join one, given the worldwide spread of the Dash Developer Community. An online initiative offers everyone a chance to collaborate and learn in the true spirit of blockchain, irrespective of their location.

That said, on online event is not to the detriment of doing something physical. To the contrary, it paves the path for greater collaboration.

At this stage however, we feel it is imperative to carry forward the momentum that the launch of EvoNet has given Dash. Even a few basic reference apps can go a long way in encouraging others to think creatively.

Regarding the social platform you mentioned, Floyx is not only live but gaining quick traction within the crypto space. Many Dash community members have started using it quite actively including the official Dash Communication unit. If you get an opportunity, please do check it out; their interface is quite engaging.

Sure, I support this to that extent but I don't see the results I'd be looking for. Likewise you haven't addressed the fact none of our existing developer talent seem to have worked with you, the 'Dash Developers' tagline is pretty much a misnomer if you aren't representing or connecting new developers to our existing developers.

A centralized mixing service and a little established social network aren't enough justification for me. You can downvote or ignore my opinion if you like but it comes from someone who has developer advocacy experience and partaken in and volunteered at many hackathons.

As I said in my first post, if there is room in the budget sure, but there are a lot of improvements to be made here.

Hi Ash

I am not sure if you have this part right. The focus of our efforts thus far has been to build outreach to new developers, content creation, support and integrations.

Given the surge of interest in making apps on Evonet based on queries, the proposed hackathon in itself is a structured attempt to bring together people for a constructive cause. While there are many other ideas such as maintaining job boards / AMAs / promoting internships to further collaboration, we have strictly prioritised outreach to maintain a strong focus.

Apart from the integrations, we have also recently announced a partnership with Kimeo - a funded app with a fast growing user base building an innovative three sided video rewards platform. We have many collaborations in the pipeline, progressing in parallel.

We remain open to suggestions and are always happy to receive feedback.

Im not sure i agree that a dashdev hackathon should cost the dao 30k, with an overwhelming majority of that towards HR expenses!

That to in India.

Hi Realmrhack

The proposed Hackathon is wholly online to enable developers to participate from across the world. The Hackathon is a part of the Dash Developer Program to celebrate and promote the launch of Dash Evonet.
